Why Digital Belongs in the Museum.

When we say "digital belongs in the museum," we don’t mean replacing the physical experience of visitors, but rather expanding the museum’s reach and deepening its impact in a new way.

We are talking about:

  • Unlocking greater access to knowledge — making collections and archives available to anyone, anywhere.

  • Bringing stories to life with movement and emotion — using multimedia and interactive tools to create new narratives that resonate.

  • Sharing collections and archives without borders — breaking down geographical and physical barriers to cultural heritage. .

As the Mama.Media team, we had the privilege of collaborating closely with the team at the Depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen to explore new ways for the museum to expand its digital presence. Together, we worked on developing multiple apps and digital archiving solutions designed to support them towards greater accessibility and audience engagement.

Together, we created a series of digital experiences:

  • A carefully structured digital archive that houses both historical and contemporary visual material.

  • Personal film study booths equipped with high-quality screens and headphones that offer to visitors an intimate and focused encounter with the museum’s film and video collection.

  • An interactive app that reveals hidden layers in iconic paintings through high-resolution X-ray and infrared scans, inviting visitors to discover the unseen stories behind the artworks.

  • A custom kiosk app powered by AI and image recognition technology, enabling visitors to explore over 2,500 paintings through simple keyword searches.
